Cluster Development of Silk Weavers (2007- 2013)

Marfat is the facilitating agency of a Cluster Development Programme (CDP) of silk handloom weavers of the Dangapara GP of M-J Block of Murshidabad district. The Programme, supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), aims at all round development of the handloom based silk industry in Dangapara GP through various activities involving improving the quality and supply of raw materials, up-gradation of the existing handlooms and skills of the weavers, better exposure and linkage with the market etc. The programme was formally launched in Dec’09 in the presence of District Magistrate, Murshidabad and NABARD officials. Already 100 weavers have been organised into 20 Artisan Groups.  All the Artisan Groups have been linked with the local service bank. These Groups are now getting loans at lower rates of interest than charged by the local money-lenders. In the final quarter of the financial year ending on 31st March 2010, the silk weaver’s of Dangapara have been able to generate additional orders of over Rs.200,000 with Marfat’s assistance from shops and boutiques based in Kolkata.
